Title: Inverse Problems in Thermal Transport Systems

Abstract: A number of inverse natural and forced thermal convection problems will be addressed. We will mainly concentrate on inverse problems with overspecified boundary conditions in one part of the boundary and insufficient conditions in another. Functional optimization methods will be presented using continuum adjoint and sensitivity fields. A number of computational and mathematical issues will be discussed including importance of regularization, uniqueness of solution, and implementation using a novel object-oriented environment. The motivation for examining such inverse problems arises from the need to design solidification processes that result in desired microstructures and some examples will be presented with these applications in mind. In closing, we will briefly review some of our current activities in real-time robust control of materials processes in the presence of uncertainty and the role that inverse problem techniques may play.
